Technical explanation
A formal agreement defining measurable service commitments, responsibilities, exclusions and remedies between a provider and customer. Its behaviour is defined through explicit syntax, contracts, protocols, versions and error handling. Interoperability also depends on security, validation, observability and lifecycle governance.
Business relevance
It supports interoperable, maintainable systems and reduces integration ambiguity, failure and change cost.
Implementation example
A cross-functional team applies Service-Level Agreement (SLA) in a production initiative, defines ownership and success criteria, tests representative scenarios, monitors outcomes and records corrective actions before scaling.
Limitations and common misconceptions
Standards and interfaces reduce ambiguity but do not ensure semantic compatibility, reliability or security. Versioning and operational ownership remain necessary.
